I suppose that blackwater rivers are not generally thought of as “picturesque.” They drain swamps and lowlands and meander slowly through bottomland forests. But they can be quite beautiful, with their own unique forms, colors, shades, and textures. There is a fascinating juxtaposition in the serenity of the slowly moving river and the tangled struggle for space and light along its banks. This is the beauty of the Waccamaw River that I have tried to capture in these pictures and I hope some of it comes through. (Note: For details regarding geographic references, see “Places” under Notes and Reflections.)
All of the pictures on this site were taken on or near the Waccamaw River, between Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina, and Red Bluff Landing in Horry County, South Carolina.
