About

The sole purpose of this website is to promote the beauty and diversity of the Waccamaw River. The Waccamaw is a blackwater river that begins in southeastern North Carolina and flows southward into South Carolina, merging with the Intracoastal Waterway just above Bucksport in Horry County. From Bucksport the river continues southward into Georgetown County on its way to Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

I consider the Waccamaw River to be a precious ecological and recreational resource and it is my hope that this website will help foster a greater appreciation and enjoyment of the river, and by doing so, further the cause of preserving and protecting it. I am not a photographer or a scientist – I am simply a nature lover who has found something special in a river and hopes to share it.

The pictures on this site were taken on or near the upper Waccamaw River, between Lake Waccamaw, in Columbus County, North Carolina, and the boat landing at Red Bluff Road (County Road 31), which is located just below the intersection of SC 905 and County Road 31 in Horry County, South Carolina.

This is an ongoing project which I hope to improve and expand for as long as I can get in and out of my kayak. Please check in occasionally to see what’s new, and feel free to send me your comments and suggestions.

Thanks for visiting.

DEDICATION

I have been fortunate to have known some extraordinary people in my life. I dedicate this website to the memory of two of them: to my grandfather, Cecil F. Carter, gifted gardener, accomplished outdoorsman, and dedicated conservationist; and to my mother-in-law, Marguerite Edwards (“Ma”) Nill, whose wisdom, kindness, and love of learning have been an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Leopold quote from: River Channel Change with Time: An Example, Address of Retiring President of The Geological Society of America, Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 1972, Geological Society of America Bulletin, v.84, p. 1858.
