One of the things that amazes me about the river is how much it can change from one week to the next — and sometimes from one day to the next. Besides the expected seasonal changes in foliage and blossoms, the level of the river changes with seasons and rainfall, giving it an entirely different look. Similarly, the river transforms on overcast days when the surrounding swamps and forests are denied the benefit of even filtered light. I have tried to capture some of the different looks in the pictures below. [Note: For an expanded discussion of seasonal changes and changes in water levels see my entries under “Notes and Reflections.”]
All of the pictures on this site were taken on or near the Waccamaw River, between Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina, and Red Bluff Landing in Horry County, South Carolina.
